Hear your timing: balance hitsounds and music before practising

Check which sounds follow your inputs, compare music and effect balance, and avoid mistaking an audio change for a timing fix.

Separate the song from input feedback

Hitsounds provide feedback when you interact with hit objects. A circle or slider-head sound can help you hear how your input lines up with the music. Not every sound is a fresh keypress, though: slider events can produce passive sounds, and storyboard samples can play independently of whether you hit an object. Before using a sound to diagnose timing, establish which event produced it. Treat the replay's input and judgement data as a separate check.

Start with a simple, audible comparison

Suggested exercise: choose a familiar map with a clear pulse and a simple circle section. Keep the output device, playback rate and timing offsets unchanged. Listen to the phrase once, then play it while attending to the relationship between the music and your circle hitsounds. If you cannot distinguish the two, first adjust their balance rather than changing universal offset. Lowering the competing channel may make the cue clearer without increasing the overall volume.

Know what the volume controls change

In stable, music and effect volume are separate controls; the effect channel includes hitsounds and other game sounds. Skin and beatmap sound settings also affect which samples you hear. Record the selected skin and whether beatmap samples are being used. Client layouts can differ, so look for the equivalent controls in your version. Avoid copying someone else's percentages as a target: different samples and output setups can produce very different balances at the same displayed values.

Compare two balances on the same phrase

Make a small balance change, play the phrase again, then return to the original balance for a third attempt. Ask whether the pulse is still audible and whether you can hear a deliberately observed early or late hit against it. Check the judgement result afterwards instead of assuming that a sharper-sounding sample means better timing. If one balance helps only because you have memorised the phrase, repeat the comparison on a second comfortable song.

Do not use a slider sound as proof of a new tap

A repeated sound during a slider may be feedback from following its path rather than an instruction to press again. Review a circle-only phrase first if that distinction is confusing, then compare a phrase with sliders while watching the input overlay. Keep track of the slider head and the next circle separately. Keep audio clarity and calibration as separate questions

After choosing an audible balance, play several familiar maps with unchanged offsets. Record whether the new balance helps you notice a recurring error, rather than claiming it corrected that error automatically. If timing still seems consistently displaced, investigate that separately using comparable plays and the client's calibration tools. Do not repeatedly move an offset to rescue one difficult section. Save a dependable audio setup and spend the next practice block on the specific rhythm or input mistake that remains.
